Give significance in final one-sentence paragraph. List inclosures at lower left. Begintezt of report on AF Form 118-Part [I.) 1, Unidentified flying objects were observed on radar by personnel of Detachment "2" 737th AC&W Squadron, The return varied in shape from a V shape to W shape to M shape. It faded after several minutes of observation. 2. It is the opinion of electronics personnel in this Division that such a return might have been caused by: a, Anomalous Propagation b. Ship-Borne radar jamming Detachment "2" radar c. Geese or Storks in flight. 3. Logical deduction is that one of above mentiohed possibilities is the cause for this radar return, DECLASSIFIED Authority: NND 57597 LIBRARY SUBJECT & AREA CODES 603 13 P 59A1768 31 21 18 33-3. - INCLS. This is an Air Intelligence Information Report (AF Form 112, Report No. DI-1-53) prepared by the 316th Air Division (Defense) and dated 23 December 1953. It covers a radar observation made on the night of 16 December 1953 by Detachment 2, 737th AC&W Squadron, in northern French Morocco and the adjacent Mediterranean. The TPS-1D radar showed between one and twelve returns per sweep, each about two to three degrees wide. They formed a line on an azimuth of 250 degrees at 20 to 40 miles range and kept changing shape among V, W, and M patterns. The returns stayed roughly stationary and faded after several minutes. The named observers were an airman operator, the detachment commander, and a controller. Weather was overcast with 9/10 cloud cover and no thunderstorms. The report was signed by Major Edward O. Wittmer and one copy was sent to ATIC.
The report is a routine radar-only case with no visual sighting, photographs, or physical evidence, and the height finder was out, so there is no elevation data. Site radar maintenance personnel offered no cause. Division electronics staff proposed anomalous propagation, ship-borne radar jamming, or geese or storks, and the report concludes that one of these is the likely explanation. The report text contains a few internal inconsistencies in azimuth and grid references, which may reflect OCR or transcription errors. No substantive redactions appear.
