This record is Serial 153 from FBI Headquarters case file 62-HQ-83894, a long-running investigative file on unidentified flying objects spanning June 1947 through July 1968. The document is an enclosure from the Knoxville field office (file 65-11) concerning flying saucers reported over Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in July 1947. It includes two photographs submitted as evidence, along with a photostatic copy of a Knoxville News-Sentinel article describing how local resident W.R. Presley accidentally captured an unidentified object on film while photographing a mountain near his home at 218 Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge.
The Oak Ridge location is significant given its status as a nuclear facility, and FBI headquarters interest in aerial anomalies over secured sites was consistent with broader Cold War-era security concerns. Most pages beyond the newspaper clipping and cover sheet are blank or otherwise empty in this serial, suggesting content may be missing or withheld. The FBI Vault version of this file contains heavier redactions; this release is described as more complete, though the substantive investigative follow-up, if any, does not appear within these pages.
